Even if she can’t share the experience with her sister on the court, Maggie Monnat is doing whatever she can to keep the Baldwinsville girls basketball team a major force.
Monnat led the way for the Bees in Thursday night’s 48-36 victory over Oswego which moved the team to 4-0 on the season.
When it traveled to face the Buccaneers, B’ville was a well-rested squad, having not played for 12 days since it beat Rome Free Academy 48-36 in the finals of the Bill Middleton Tip-Off Tournament on Dec. 3.
Of course, that was nothing when compared to the enforced rest that Claire Monnat had to face after a knee injury during soccer season forced her out for basketball. Knowing this, Maggie Monnat has quickly emerged as the Bees’ leading offensive threat, averaging better than 16 points per game.
That continued against Oswego, but not right away. B’ville’s rust from its long break showed a bit as it trailed 14-9 after one period, but its defense proved consistent, hurting the Bucs as it caught up, tying the game 18-18 at the break.
All through the second half, the Bees moved the ball to Monnat, who converted in all kinds of ways. She hit a 3-pointer and five other field goals and, when fouled, sank 10 free throws to finish with 23 points overall.
Liz Giromini and Angelica Romeu provided the support, earning eight points apiece. Taylor Giglio led Oswego with 14 points.
B’ville goes for five in a row Tuesday night, hosting Utica Proctor before a key early-season clash Friday at West Genesee.
