All through the 2011-12 indoor track and field season, Cazenovia will compete in Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association events at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House.
In the first of those MVITA meets Friday night, the girls Lakers finished on top, earning 80 points to fend off Clinton, who was second with 69 points.
Paige Biviano got it started by winning the individual 55-meter hurdles in 9.37 seconds and teaming with Beth Marcelle for the team win with a combined 20.83 seconds. Biviano and Marie Sugio combined to clear 9 feet 3 inches for second place in the high jump.
Ashley Winn (7.52 seconds) and Jillian Vogl (7.79 seconds) went 1-2 in the 55-meter dash for another Laker title, and the pair, along with Ashley Kent and Maureen Milmoe, went on to claim the 4×200 relay in 1:53.06, more than five seconds ahead of runner-up Ilion.
At the longer distance of the 4×800 relay, the Lakers prevailed again as Caroline Marshall, Rae Tobey, Emma Wolsey and Jeannette Cudney finished in 10:33.18, the only time under 11 minutes in the event.
On their own, Marshall (5:12.83) and Cudney (5:16.65) went 1-2 in the 1,500-meter run as Tobey and Tori Wright joined them for another win in 21:55.67. The Lakers earned the top three spots in the sprint medley relay, too, though it didn’t count for points.
Elsewhere, Molly Woodworth and Carly Hazer were second in the shot put with combined throws of 50 feet 11 1/2 inches, and the Lakers took fourth in both the triple jump and long jump, plus fifth in the weight throw.
Cazenovia also was fourth in the 4×400 relay as Emmajean Spear, Emma Wolsey, Jackie O’Sullivan and Marie vanNieuwland got a time of 4:48.13.
On the boys side, Cazenovia earned 22 points for sixth place in the 10-team MVITA field, though Dylan Muller provided the big individual highlight as he won the pole vault, clearing 11 feet 6 inches with fewer misses than Old Forge’s Connor Rockhill.
Cam Braathen and Matt Staiger took third in the weight throw, heaving it 73 feet 11 3/4 inches between them. Kyle Markowski and Alex Devine were fourth in the 55 hurdles, with Matt Donovan and David Ayer fifth in the 55 sprint.
Billy Bigsby, Harry Penate, Teddy Tormey and Sean Satchwell ran to fifth in the 4×800 in 9:40.99. Braathen and Pat Karmis took sixth in the shot put.
Chittenango managed 20 points for seventh place in the boys MVITA standings. Kenny Galbraith, Jon Roberts, Isaac Czarnecki and Ben Seale combined to take second in the mile relay in 21:18.14.
Galbraith and Roberts also helped Jason Given and Lucas Rogers run to third in the 4×800 in 9:09 flat, while Given and Rogers teamed with Max Smith and John Dullen for fourth (4:07.56) in the 4×400. The Bears also were fifth in the 4×200 in 1:59.93.
The next MVITA relays take place Tuesday night, followed by a brief holiday rest and the John DiiMao Memorial Invitational on Dec. 30.
