As it moved toward the first tough stretch of its schedule, the Liverpool ice hockey team carried a 2-1 record, nearly matching its entire win total (three) from a season ago.
Meeting Central Square last Friday night at the Cicero Twin Rinks, the Warriors started quick, and needed that cushion later to pull out a 5-3 victory over the Red Hawks.
Liverpool battled its way to a 2-0 first-period lead. Central Square got on the board in the second period, but the Warriors countered in a big way and extended the margin to 5-2, enough to fend off the Red Hawks’ late surge.
Five different players – Dalton Horton, Tyler Garofalo, Conner Hurwitz, Luke Horton and Dan McManus – had the five Liverpool goals. Horton added two assists, with Eric Miller also getting two assists as McManus and Zach Vivenzo had one assist apiece.
The difference here was that Liverpool converted more of its scoring opportunities. Central Square took more shots – but Daniel Wu turned most of them away, recording 39 saves.
Liverpool expects the level of competition to pick up Tuesday when it met Baldwinsville on the Lysander ice the two sides will share this winter. The Warriors stay there on Friday to meet Fayetteville-Manlius.
