West Genesee’s girls tennis doubles team of Samantha Heyn and Allison Theberge earned a spot in the New York State Public High School Association championship tournament.
From Nov. 5-7, the top tennis players in the state battled for honors at Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, with Heyn and Theberge among the 30 doubles pairings.
Up against East Aurora’s tandem of Chassidy King and Keishorea Armstrong in the first round, Heyn and Theberge never got on track, taking a 6-1, 6-3 defeat.
Relegated to the consolation bracket, Heyn and Theberge won a single-set match over Sarah Han and Malini Desai (Half Hollow Hills West) 8-4, but lost in the next round to Alex Rowen and Emma Manuel (Williamsville East) 8-2.
The other Section III doubles teams in the field, Rhiannon Iorio-Carly Romano (Fayetteville-Manlius) and Becky Scullin-Shilpa Kamani), both lost in the first round, too. Cassidy Cruz and Jessica Cruz (New Rochelle) beat Christine Ho and Casey Rogovin (Edgemont) 7-5, 6-2 for the state doubles championship.
And on the singles side, Auburn’s Claire Minnoe made it all the way to the semifinals, eventually taking third place. CBA’s Olivia Messineo lost in the semifinals of the consolation bracket and Lowville’s Julia Guignard fell in the round of 16.
