Village resident Jim Phillips voted at Camillus Village Hall first-thing this morning.
“Voting has been heavy,” he said. Residents were turning out in droves to cast their vote in what could be the village’s most historical election.
Besides the choice for mayor and village trustee, up for vote is a village-wide referendum that could dissolve the village, population 1,300, into the town, with 23,000.
“I think it’s terrible,” said Phyllis Rice, after casting her vote this afternoon. “Why should we vote for [the dissolution]? That’s all I can say. Why? Leave the village alone.”
Distance markers showing where 100 feet within the polling place ends were outside village hall. Two feet away, a neon-colored shirt hung in the window, telling residents to save their village.
“I’m all for the village,” said village resident Wes Goodspeed. “If it dissolved, I get I would just stay here and keep right on going. I wouldn’t be happy, but it’s up to the people.”
Polls close at 9 p.m. Results of the dissolution vote will be posted online when they become available.
Last week, the village board voted to adopt the budget.
