By a relatively slim margin, the Cazenovia girls cross country team just missed out on repeating as Section III Class C champions.
Under gorgeous autumn skies Saturday at Jamesville Beach Park, the Lakers dueled with Tully for Class C team honors. With 93 points, Cazenovia topped everyone in the 15-team field except for the Black Knights, who won with 75 points.
The key came up front, as three of Tully’s runners (Ashley Evans, Katherine Ward and Ellen Jaworski) crossed the finish line within the top 11, all before the Lakers’ top competitors finished.
Sophomore Jeanette Cudney finished 15th, in 20 minutes, 51 seconds, just ahead of her teammate, senior Michelle Karker, who was 16th in 20:53.3. Sophomore Megan Stanford was 18th in 21:04.4 as another sophomore, Malone Gabor, grabbed 20th place in 21:12.6.
Just behind them, junior Margaret Wolsey worked her way to 24th place in 21:29.8, rounding out the Lakers’ scoring column. Senior Rae Tobey was 29th, in 21:44.8, while senior Logan Koennecke was 53rd in 23:02.6. Sophomore Tori Wright (23:51.4), junior Evelyn Wells (25:21.9) and senior Paige Biviano (27:20.2) also competed.
Cazenovia’s boys team was 15th among 18 Class C entrants in its sectional meet. Freshman Sean Satchwell had a strong showing, as he took 35th place in a clocking of 18:40.2.
Ian Abernathy was next in 19:54.9. Drew Devendorf (20:24.5), Sean Maliga (21:07.7), Matt Mistur (21:22.0), Jack Woltman (21:27.7), Carter Biviano (21:36.1), Brian Johnson (21:40.1) and Joe Stehle (21:40.4) all followed in line.
Among Class B girls teams, Chittenango finished seventh, with 185 points. Shannon Bunce led the Bears as she ran to 12th place in 21:21.1, while Anna Galbraith took 30th place in 22:38.2. Kendall McGee was 42nd (23:16.6), followed in the scoring column by Kaitlin Alongi (24:46.8) and Alyssa Crane, who had a time of 26:05.7.
As the Chittenango boys gained 12th place in a 15-team Class B field, Jason Given led the way, finishing 41st in 19:14.7. Kenny Galbraith wasn’t far behind, in 57th place (19:42.1), with Rogers Lucas (20:05.5), Isaac Czarnecki (20:08.6) and Jacob Teeter (20:25.5) in close pursuit.
