With construction on West Lake and Onondaga streets completed for the winter, and both streets having been freshly paved and curbed, the village has a new problem with those two roads: speeding.
“We have a lot of speeders now [on West Lake Street] because the road is so smooth and there’s no more potholes,” Village Police Chief Lloyd Perkins told the village board of trustees at its Oct. 28 meeting. “We’ll definitely have more patrols there now; I know that’s where I like to set up.”
Perkins’ comment came in response to Village Director of Municipal Operations Bob Lotkowictz’s report on the West Lake Street now being “cleaned up for the winter.”
Perkins said the police will not only be increasing their speeding patrols on West Lake Street, but also monitoring for illegal parking, since parking is not allowed on either side of the road.
Perkins also said that Onondaga Street, with its new pavement finished the week of Oct. 17, “is a speedway too.”
Because of the increase in speeding in recent weeks, the police will be “stepping up enforcement on those two roads,” Perkins said.
The police chief also said he wants to remind all village residents to call 911 if they need the police, even if the issue is something minor or residents just want to discuss something. “Still call 911,” Perkins said. “It’s the easiest way to reach us.”
