At last, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls volleyball team, with its 11-1 record, got a chance to test defending state Class AA champion Baldwinsville last Tuesday night.
It did not turn out well, as the Northstars lost to the Bees 25-7, 25-1, 25-9. Once the Bees got 14 straight points in the opening set, it was settled, and B’ville nearly got a second-set shutout as it still has not lost a set this year.
To its credit, CNS rebounded and took out Henninger 25-15, 25-6, 25-18 on Thursday night. Lindsey Silfer stood out with 10 assists, seven kills and three aces, while Amy Van Hoven put up six kills and eight assists.
Elizabeth Miles had four aces, four digs and two kills. Adrianna Patzer added four aces as Carly Rebecchi and Taylor Sherwin each got three kills.
On the same night, Liverpool lost to Oswego 25-9, 28-26, 25-23. Though it played close in each of the last two sets, the Warriors could not overcome the Buccaneers’ quick start.
Dorothy Rosekrans led Liverpool with 10 kills and seven digs. Meghan Stonebarger had 15 assists, while Emily Flohr gained six kills. Katie Rowell picked up three kills and four assists as Alexis Hasper got three blocks. 9+
CNS saw its boys volleyball team nearly knock off undefeated Oswego on Friday, only to take a five-set loss to the Buccaneers.
Twice, the Northstars went ahead, claiming the first set 25-21 and the third set 25-17. Both times, Oswego rallied, as it won the second set 25-19 and the fourth set 25-18. Finally, the Bucs pulled out a tight final set 25-22.
In defeat, Billy Werksman (11 kills), Joel Brousseau (10 kills) and Geoff Holmes (nine kills) all had fine front-line work, backed by Alex Brodhead’s five kills. Justin Collins managed 37 assists, plus four kills and three blocks.
Oswego’s Dylan Lavner had 23 kills and 28 digs, while Kevin Carpentier had 37 assists, eight digs, nine blocks and nine kills.
Prior to that, CNS swept past the combined Syracuse city squad 25-19, 25-7, 25-17. Collins finished with 32 assists, feeding a front line where Brousseau led with 10 kills. Werksman had five kills and five aces, with Holmes also getting four kills. Josh Rodriguez had four kills as Andrew Bocyck and Nate Tyrell each put up three kills.
Liverpool’s boys volleyball team won a tight four-set match over Central Square. The Warriors won the opener 25-21 and lost the second set 25-21, but it pulled out tight 25-23 wins in both the third and fourth sets to prevail.
Dalton Horton finished with 20 assists, his passes going to John Milligan, who had 10 kills and nine digs, and Nate LeClair, who had six kills. Chris Valerino and Ben Zenkir each had two kills and three blocks as Joe Kenney added five digs. Pat Kenney had three blocks and three digs.
