When stormy weather acted up on Sept. 27, the Cazenovia girls soccer team had to scrap its initial meeting with Westhill, now the state’s no. 3-ranked Class B team.
The two sides finally got together Thursday at the Sean Goggin Sports Complex to make up that contest, and the Warriors lived up to that high ranking as it beat the Lakers 4-0.
There wasn’t a huge shot disparity in the contest, but the difference was that Westhill finished off its chances, twice in each half. Maggie Tripodi had two goals, with Lindsey Lippert and Kelly Ristoff getting the other tallies.
Jamie Enders did make seven saves, and Cazenovia had a fair amount of opportunities, but were unable to get anything past Warrior goalie Sam Peebles, who had eight saves.
To start this busy stretch of three games in four days, Cazenovia hosted Solvay last Tuesday afternoon and relied on Kristi Kleine, Kayla Dorrance and the rest of the offense to fight past the Bearcats 6-3.
Kleine and Dorrance helped the Lakers overcome defensive lapses to take a 4-2 halftime lead, and the margin grew in the latter stages.
Overall, Kleine picked up four goals and added an assist, while Dorrance put in the other two goals. Caroline Franz, Colleen Dougherty, Kelsi Fredericks and Audrey Burbidge all got credit for assists.
Right after Westhill, the Lakers played Jordan-Elbridge Friday and hammered the Eagles by that exact same 4-0 margin to improve to 9-4, clinching a winning record for 2011.
All the goals came in the first half, where Dougherty scored twice and added an assist. Kleine had one goal and one assist, while Fredericks also found the net and Burbidge chimed in with an assist.
Cazenovia’s boys soccer team was not as busy, but still improved its own possible playoff seeding with a pair of road wins – one difficult, the other not as much.
On Wednesday at Earl Hadley Stadium, the Lakers beat Solvay 2-1 in overtime. Both sides scored in the first half, and that 1-1 tie held up until the first extra period, when the Lakers put home the winning goal to subdue the Bearcats.
Tyler Modzeleski and Conner Polsin earned the goals, with Luke Dorsey adding an assist. Chris Matteson finished with nine saves.
The Lakers followed with a 7-0 rout of Jordan-Elbridge on Friday, improving to 8-3-1 as it heads toward a busy final week of the regular season where both Cazenovia teams play Homer, Westhill and Marcellus, in that order.
