Many different tasks awaited the Cazenovia field hockey team in the closing stretch of the regular season, chief among them maintaining a pair of win streaks.
The Lakers made it 70 in a row against Onondaga High School League foes last Tuesday, at Cato-Meridian, unleashing plenty of offense in an 8-0 shutout of the Blue Devils, which was the makeup of a rained-out Oct. 3 meeting.
Jillian Vogl, with four assists, and Emmajean Speer, with two assists, provided the passes as three different players – MaryKate Conley, Nicole Chiarello and Emily Willard – notched two goals apiece. Vogl and Speer had the other goals, with Shelby Chase tacking on an assist.
A day later, back at Burton Street, the Lakers faced Homer and made it 12 wins in a row overall, taking out the Trojans 7-0. Here, Cazenovia didn’t wait to act, roaring out to a 5-0 edge by halftime and taking 20 shots before it was done.
Speer had a three-goal hat trick, with Vogl amassing two goals and two assists. Jessy Silfer and Annika Christensen had their own goals, with Willard and Shelby Chase contributing assists.
All was supposed to lead to Friday’s match with Cortland, the same team that took the Lakers to overtime on Sept. 21 before Cazenovia escaped with a 2-1 win.
But rain and lightning forced yet another postponement, and the Lakers need to make up that match, plus make a Wednesday visit to Weedsport, before the regular season concludes.
