Scrambling to get into the post-season, the Bishop Ludden boys soccer team needed wins, but in Tuesday’s match against Faith Heritage could only manage a 2-2 draw with the Saints.
And even that required a comeback, as Faith led 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals by Chris Jackson and Caleb Casamento.
Ryan Lantry led the rally, scoring once and assisting on Nick Walker’s tally, though neither side scored in a pair of 10-minute overtime periods. Peter Impelizzieri had eight saves, three less than Saints counterpart Chris Cunningham.
At home Thursday night to face Cato-Meridian, the Gaelic Knights pulled away in a 3-0 shutout. Ludden only led 1-0 at halftime before wearing the visiting Blue Devils down.
Ralph Romano, Cameron Littlejohn and Jared Taylor each had a goal, while Cameron Bennett, Nick Walker and Ryan Lantry earned one assist apiece.
Meanwhile, the Bishop Ludden girls team, only concerned about what kind of seed it will get in the playoffs, had a key match Wednesday against Bishop Grimes and, in a hard-fought battle, beat the Cobras 1-0.
Neither side could score in the first half. The Gaelic Knights had a majority of the chances, though, and that pressure finally paid off in the second half when Shelby Hunter, off a feed from Morgan Beamish, beat Ashley Morgan for the game’s only goal. Ludden held Grimes to just three shots.
Ludden’s girls still have Cato-Meridian and Pulaski to face in the last week of the regular season, while the boys Gaelic Knights, at 5-7, go to Bishop Grimes and Tully, needing one win to be sure of reaching the playoffs.
