A bit of re-scheduling meant that the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse field hockey teams did not see each other face-to-face until October.
When they did meet Thursday night, the Warriors had to stay patient, but took over in the late stages for a 2-0 victory over the Northstars.
Neither side could generate a big amount of scoring chances in the first half, which left it at 0-0.
However, Liverpool’s Danielle Abold would make the difference, twice putting shots past CNS goalie Meghan Wiacek as Emma Lamison got credit for one assist. The two sides will meet again Oct. 18, in the last week of the regular season.
Two nights earlier, the Warriors controlled the flow of last Tuesday night’s battle with the Black Knights at RFA Stadium, yet had to settle for a 2-2 tie, the first blemish for Liverpool after 11 consecutive wins to open the season.
They had met before this season, on Sept. 12 at LHS Stadium. Liverpool won that contest 2-1, and would hold a huge advantage in opportunities during the rematch three weeks later.
Despite the disparity, though, Liverpool trailed, 1-0, at halftime. And even as it kept on pushing, and even as Emma Lamison and Emily Burns were putting shots in the net, RFA kept pace, thanks to goals by Kaysie Gregory and Samantha Grunder.
So they went to a pair of seven-on-seven overtime periods. Liverpool could score in neither of them to win it, stymied many times by Black Knights goalie Danielle Famolaro, who had 23 saves.
Before this, CNS had beaten Fayetteville-Manlius 1-0, avenging a defeat to the Hornets by that same margin on Sept. 12.
Though the Northstars took most of the shots in this game, F-M goalie Abby Cunningham made eight saves. CNS stayed patient, and in the second half Kristi Thompson, off a feed from Maria Pitonzo, beat Cunnigham for the game’s only goal.
