Earning its first victory of the 2011 season, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls swim team claimed most of the individual races and knocked off Fayetteville-Manlius 96-90 Thursday night at Nottingham High School.
The Northstars prevailed mostly due to its depth, which was first on display in the 200 medley relay, where Tina Morris, Breanna Ruffrage, Jessica Rodford and Nisha Sposato posted a time of 2:08.89, beating the Hornets by more than three seconds.
Ruffrage would, on her own, take the 100 freestyle in 59.52 seconds. Later in the meet, Ruffrage was part of the Northstars’ 200 freestyle relay team that won in 1:50.62.
Emily Altier, who swam a leg in the 200 free relay, was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:29.59. Stacey DeCarr earned 196.95 points on the diving board, while Kelly Festa edged F-M’s Gabby Hall, 1:20.76 to 1:21.39, in the 100 breaststroke. Nicole Blidy was first in the 100 butterfly.
As this went on, Liverpool went to Baldwinsville on that same night and did not find the same success, falling to the undefeated Bees 53-41.
This happened despite plenty of fine individual efforts, including Madeline Murphy’s sweep of the sprint races. Murphy swam the 50 freestyle in a swift 26.01 seconds and, in the 100 freestyle, beat teammate Madison Sestak, 57.58 seconds to 58.88.
Both Sestak and Murphy joined Madison Hall and Renee Stromski as Liverpool won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.79. Kaitlyn Martin led B’ville as she got wins in both the 200 freestyle (2:07.38) and 500 freestyle (5:44.63), plus a relay.
