Amid abundant sunshine, and in its own backyard, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys golf team fought off West Genesee and the rest of the field Wednesday to win the Section III Class AA tournament at Green Lakes State Park.
The Hornets finished with a team total of 386, just four shots better than the Wildcats (390), while Baldwinsville claimed third place with 396.
Among individuals, Anthony Millimaci did best, with a two-over-par 73, which tied for fourth place, just two shots behind the individual champion, Central Square’s Brandon Payne.
Nick Santaro stepped up with a 75, while Nick Perrucci managed a 78. Mike Lee and Ryan Keller both shot 80 and Dan Thomas finished with an 81.
All six golfers – Millimaci, Santaro, Perrucci, Lee, Keller and Thomas – qualified for the overall sectional tournament, to be held in May 2012 at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course.
Before all this, F-M its mark to 10-2 by going to Auburn and, in the makeup of a rained-out Sept. 14 match, beating the Maroons 195-211 at Highland. Perrucci stood out, shooting a 35. Lee contributed a 38, while Santaro had a 40. Keller and Toren DeRosa both shot 41.
Then the Hornets beat Cicero-North Syracuse’s Green side 190-214 at Woodcrest. Lee, Keller and Perrucci all shot 37 in the overcast conditions, while Millimaci added a 39 and Santaro managed a 40.
As this went on, CBA used a quartet of victories to move its mark to 13-0. In a 195-214 win over Cortland at Drumlins, Aidan Fuller shot a 35, one shot ahead of Jack Bellardini, while Chris Bousquet and Matt Preston added rounds of 38.
CBA also beat Homer 201-211 at Drumlins, with Fuller shooting a 36, the only sub-40 score either side could register. Andrew Derrenbacker finished on that number, one ahead of Bellardini and Bousquet, while Mark Finlay managed a 43.
With the same team total, the Brothers romped through Phoenix 201-242, as Derrenbacker this time stood out by shooting a 36. Bellardini posted a 40, one ahead of Fuller and Finlay, while Bousquet put together a 43.
And CBA also handled Mexico 220-240, mostly because Bellardini shot a 36, six strokes better than anyone else. Joe Fleischman managed a 43, while Casey Janowski posted a 46. Sean Dain (47) and Joe Durkin (48) contributed to the win, too.
Jamesville-DeWitt moved its mark to 13-1 with a 191-235 win over Mexico at Drumlins. Erik Davis shot a 36, one shot better than Deke Burns, while Mike Engstrom and Edward Han both shot 39. Ben Katsarsky had a 40.
Then the Red Rams beat Phoenix 223-230 at Beaver Meadows, with Burns shooting 40 and Davis adding a 42. Engstrom and Katsarsky each shot 45.
But on Thursday, the Red Rams took a blemish, falling to Cortland 206-218, only its second loss of the season. This came even though Davis led all individuals with a 38, as Luke Sala posted a 41. Burns (44), Engstrom (46) and Katsarsky (49) were further behind.
