Gaining some payback, the West Genesee boys golf team took on Liverpool last Tuesday and finished up with a 185-195 victory over the Warriors, which would turn to be the Wildcats’ lone win of the week.
They had met earlier in the month, on Sept. 9, and Liverpool had won that meeting by a single shot, 193-194, so the Wildcats were eager for another opportunity.
The rematch featured Jimmy Sauda shooting a nine-hole total of 35, one shot better than Liverpool teammates Karl Deuble and Andrew VanMarter.
More important, though, was the depth WG showed. John Clare and Adam Gearhart both shot 37, while John Salanger and Louis Ciarla each finished with 38. By contrast, no other Liverpool player broke 40.
But the good feeling did not even last 24 hours as the Wildcats lost to Oswego, 197-221, on Wednesday at Oswego Country Club.
Though Clare, with a 37, tied the Buccaneers’ Alex Kunzwiler and Sam Lalonde for low individual honors, no other WG player broke 40. Ciarla did manage a 41, with Sauda falling back to a 45 and Nick Smith only earning a 47.
Rained out of Thursday’s match with Cicero-North Syracuse, the Wildcats made it up on Friday and had yet another one-shot defeat, falling to the Northstars 201-202.
This came even though Clare shot a 36, three shots ahead of CNS’s top players, Mike Mento and Joey Petrin. Semple also shot 39, but the Northstars had three of the next four best scores, the only exception Adam Korzeniewski’s 41. Smith and Ciarla both shot 43.
