Weather temporarily interrupted the plans of the Westhill girls soccer team, who was planning to precede Marcellus in facing Cazenovia during the last days of September.
When rain and lightning hit the Sean Goggin Sports Complex last Tuesday, it kept the state Class B no. 4-ranked Warriors from meeting the Lakers.
So Westhill was off until Thursday, when it hosted Skaneateles. Amid soggy conditions, the Warriors still flourished, beating that other group of Lakers 4-1.
Some parts of the Westhill field featured puddles, but the two sides played on. And Westhill seized a 2-0 lead in the first half, getting goals from Kelly Ristoff and Kelly Lippert to move in front.
Early in the second half, Skaneateles cut the margin to 2-1 on Bridget Field’s unassisted goal. Less than a minute later, though, Brenna Rainone converted, restoring the two-goal margin, and Lindsay Lippert added a clincher. Sam Peebles and Gwen Dougherty split time in goal, making seven combined saves.
On Friday night, Marcellus took its shot at Cazenovia, and thanks to a rousing second-half turn by Kathryn Busa, worked its way past the Lakers in another 4-1 decision.
The Mustangs actually trailed, 1-0, after Cazenovia’s Kristi Kleine scored less than eight minutes into the game. Marcellus stayed patient, though, and Brielle Filtch converted in the 35th minute to tie it, 1-1, just before the break.
Then Busa took charge. Having already assisted on Filtch’s goal, she put the Lakers away all by herself with a three-goal natural hat trick. Filtch and Rebecca Nolan took turns earning asiists.
This followed the Mustangs’ 8-1 romp over Jordan-Elbridge. Filtch managed her own three-goal hat trick as Busa, Lexy Bird, Molly MacLachlan, Meghan Bankey and Dani Felty earned one goal apiece. MacLachlan and Teresa Finn gained single assists.
