Still rolling through the early part of its schedule, the Marcellus girls volleyball team demolished a pair of overmatched foes to improve to 5-0 on the season.
First, the Mustangs easily handled Syracuse’s Institute of Technology Central 25-6, 25-14, 25-9 in last Tuesday’s action. Renee Eddy, with five aces, and Kelsey Burke, with four aces, both served well, and both also finished with three kills. Hannah O’Brien added five kills, with Devon Landers adding three blocks and Anna Smith three aces. Tori Bingham had eight assists and three aces.
As a follow-up, the Mustangs romped past Bishop Ludden 25-6, 25-5, 25-7. Allie Massara had 12 aces, winning half of a set just with her serves, with Cassie Roberts adding nine aces and Kelsey Burke getting seven aces. Smith picked up seven assists and Renee Eddy had three kills and four aces.
Earlier in the week, Westhill earned its own 25-8, 25-10, 25-10 sweep of Ludden. Clarissa Sterly led the Warriors with seven kills, three aces and two blocks, while Annaleigh Gedney gained six assists and two aces. Carrie Griffo had five aces and three kills. Lauren Eaton also got five aces, with Mackenzie Davis managing five assists and four aces.
Solvay returned on Wednesday, beating Fowler 25-15, 25-12, 25-14, while Westhill made it back-to-back wins on Thursday in a five-set battle with LaFayette.
Twice, the Warriors took the lead, winning the first set 25-20 and the third set 25-17. Twice, the Lancers came back, pulling out narrow wins in the second set (25-23) and third set (26-24) to force the match to the wire.
But in the final set, Westhill won big, 25-14, as Gedney finished off a night that included 37 assists and nine digs. Nanno amassed 21 digs to go with her 10 kills and six aces, while on the front line Sterly led with 13 kills. Bornstein managed eight kills, six aces and 14 digs.
West Genesee took its shot at defending Class AA champion Baldwinsville last Tuesday night, and only was close in the second set of a 25-9, 25-19, 25-10 loss to the Bees.
In defeat, Liz LaComb earned 11 assists and four digs. Emily Shackleton managed four kills, with Christina Holzhauer, Trish Andrews (three kills each) and Jesse Allen (three blocks) helping on the front line. Jackie Harris added five digs. For B’ville, Shannon Albright had 27 assists and Allegra Bell gained 11 kills.
But the Wildcats would rebound to beat Auburn 25-16, 25-21, 25-16 two nights later. Shackleton put up 13 kills, with Allen gaining five kills. Harris, with 10 digs, and Andrews, with six digs, provided superb defense as LaComb earned 23 assists.
