In yet another big early-season showdown, the Christian Brothers Academy girls swim team withstood the challenge of Fayettevile-Manlius last Monday night, beating the Hornets 104-79, one of two wins in three days that pushed the Brothers’ record to 3-0.
Again, Summer Schmitt led the way, just as she had in CBA’s win over Jamesville-DeWitt on Sept. 15. Schmitt swam the 100 butterfly in 58.45 seconds and also claimed the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.07.
Kathryn Coughlin stepped in and tore to victory in the 100 freestyle in 55.75 seconds before taking first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.17. Maggie Fletcher won the 500 freestyle in a clocking of 5:19.99 after breaking the two-minute mark in the 200 freestyle – 1:58.36, to be exact.
Lexi McCauley was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:28.26. Kelly Bewley needed 164.4 points to prevail in diving. Schmitt, Coughlin, McCauley and Elizabeth Catalano teamed up in the 200 medley relay (1:56.84) and won that event before Coughlin and McCauley combined with Fletcher and Kendall Sangster to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.17.
F-M claimed just one individual race – the 50 freestyle, where Caroline Wilson needed 28.11 seconds for the top spot. Later on, Katie Pechacek, Morgan Way, Julia Barger and Olivia Ryan were victorious in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:15.09.
From there, CBA moved on to Wednesday’s meet at Skaneateles, where it beat the Lakers 100-86. Schmitt set two Skaneateles Community Center pool records, in the 200 IM (2:14.90) and 100 backstroke, where she finished in 1:01.70.
Fletcher swept the 50 freestyle (25.86 seconds) and 100 freestyle (55.65 seconds) sprints, also helping Schmitt, McCauley and Coughlin take the 200 medley relay in 1:56.03. Coughlin was first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.49), while Courtney Finkbeiner emerged to take the 500 freestyle in 5:46.26.
Meanwhile, F-M ran into West Genesee and lost a 99-81 decision to the defending CNY Counties League champion Wildcats.
Pechacek did edge Kim Pedrotti, 5:30.67 to 5:31.82, in the 500 freestyle, and helped Way, Barger and Caroline Wilson win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:09.85. But the Wildcats won every other event as Olivia Castro (200 and 100 freestyle) and Shannon Cahalan (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) each claimed two races.
J-D returned to action on Tuesday, beating Manlius-Pebble Hill/Westhill 95-84. The Red Rams got a superb effort from Kalie Coyne, who tore through the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.34 after edging MPH’s Rachel Perry, 2:04.49 to 2:04.69, in a tense 200 freestyle.
Danielle Doss impressed with 219.05 points on the diving board, edging J-D teammate Taylor Cook (205.90 points) for the top spot. Molly Hair (200 IM, 2:27.07), Amanda Behan (50 freestyle, 27.45 seconds), Morgan Pusey (100 freestyle, 1:00.78), Alden Coyne (100 butterfly, 1:09.24) and Sophia Farchione (500 freestyle, 6:09.39) all won events, too.
Perry did win the 100 backstroke in 1:02.34, beating Hair (1:07.38), and teamed with Nika Jones, Phoebe Patrician and Ashley Rocker to take the 400 freestyle relay in 4:07.01. On J-D’s side, Hair, Behan, Pusey and Meghan Engstrom won the 200 medley relay (2:07.14), while Kalie Coyne joined Hair, Behan and Pusey to claim the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.13.
