In their lone regular-season encounter, the Liverpool girls tennis team roared past rival Cicero-North Syracuse 6-1 on Friday afternoon, though the final total did not quite reflect the close nature of the contest.
The host Warriors all won four doubles matches, but three of them went the full length. Sara Noll and Alexandra Reilly had to rally past Richelle Brousseau and Jessica Francatti 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Caitlin Corrice and Katey Padden did the same to beat Kristin Inthirakot and Bethany Wicks 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Holly Glor and Melissa Inch did win the first set, but still had to fight off Kathy Nguyen and Sarah Storie 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, while Monica Johnson and Sally Johnson had the easiest time of it, beating Melanie Nguyen and Beth Reeves 6-3, 6-0.
CNS’s lone point came in third singles, where Hannah Simmons got through a third-set tie-breaker and beat Hannah Foster 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2). Otherwise, the Warriors’ Kristina Monahkova routed Kelsey Wilson 6-0, 6-1 and Nicolette Hamilton got a 6-3, 7-5 win over Brittany Wilson.
Playing in its opener last Monday afternoon, CNS managed just a single point in a 6-1 loss to Rome Free Academy. Nguyen and Reeves earned that point for the Northstars in fourth doubles, needing a third-set tie-breaker to edge past Jena Mattie and Emily Peters 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.
RFA dominated in singles, limiting Kelsey Wilson, Kathy Nguyen and Brittany Wilson to five games in six sets. In a three-set doubles battle, Brousseau and Francatti fell to Emily Closinski and Melissa Kobito 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
A day later, the Northstars lost 7-0 to West Genesee, but put up quite a fight in singles, as every match went to three sets.
Kelsey Wilson won the first set against Samantha Heyn, but lost 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Brittany Wilson was two games from victory but could not quite get to the end, falling to Theresa Clark 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Hannah Simmons reached a third-set tie-breaker, only to lose to Taylor Ginestro 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
When CNS played Fayetteville-Manlius on Friday, it was the third match in four days, and it fell to the Hornets 7-0, unable to score more than three games in any single set. The closest match saw Kristin Inthirakot and Bethany Wicks fall to Jessica Guarino and Caitlin Welker 6-2, 6-2.
Liverpool returned on Wednesday, shutting out Utica Proctor 7-0 and not dropping a set in any of the seven matches. Monahkova routed Rose Zaloom 6-1, 6-0, while Glor fought past Paw Lah 6-3, 7-6 and Hamilton beat Andrea Cvijanovic 6-4, 6-4.
Moving to the doubles side, Noll and Reilly battled early in a 6-4, 6-0 win over Vicky Fam and Erica Andria. Corrice and Padden topped Kylie Cosby and Heather Hughes 6-3, 6-1.
Also, in first doubles Inch and Erna Abadzic topped Gabriella Morreale and Jessica David 6-3, 6-0, while Sally Johnson and Hannah Foster got past Danielle Morrissey and Eboni Jackson 6-2, 6-1.
Right after meeting Liverpool, CNS hosted an invitational tournament on Saturday, earning 22 points to finish third behind Manlius-Pebble Hill (37 points) and Marcellus (32 points).
Still, the Northstars won in three of the doubles divisions. Storie and Kathy Nguyen beat MPH’s Alaina McGinley and Sarah Malvenda 6-1, 6-3, while Wicks and Inthirakot needed three sets to get past the Mustangs’ Olivia Higgins and Rebekah Mullins 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. Brousseau and Francatti handled the MPH duo of Elizabeth Clarkson and Scarlet Jaworski 6-4, 6-3.
