It proved a busy Labor Day weekend for both of West Genesee’s soccer teams, the boys taking second place at a tournament in Canandaigua, while the girls impressed in its opener at Skaneateles.
Carrying high expectations into 2011 after going 11-7 and reaching the Section III Class AA semifinals a season ago, the boys Wildcats started in the tournament by ripping host Canandaigua 4-0 in Friday’s opening round.
Graduallly, WG’s pressure paid off, as a 1-0 halftime lead grew in the late stages. R.J. Tinklepaugh found the net twice, while Stefanos Stamoulacatos and Jake Sutherland both had one goal and one assist. Dylan Condon stopped all seven shots he faced.
In Saturday’s final, the Wildcats met Honoeye Falls-Lima, who had topped Skaneateles 4-1 in the other part of the opening round.
WG could not claim the title, falling 2-1 as Sutherland notched his team’s only goal, Stamoulacatos earning the assist.
Ironically, as WG and Skaneateles played in the same boys tournament, the girls sides from those schools would face off on Friday. Here, the show belonged to Melissa Fumano as the Wildcats topped the Lakers 4-1.
During a wild first half, Fumano three times worked her way past Skaneateles defenders and scored, completing a natural hat trick.
Erica Geremia fed those scoring plays, earning two assists to go with her own tally, and the Wildcats’ defense protected that early lead, holding Skaneateles to five shots all afternoon.
WG’s girls play Central Square Tuesday and co-host a tournament with Westhill this weekend, while the boys open CNY Counties League action at Corcoran.
