In the last race of his high-school career, Baldwinsville boys track and field senior Shaun Thompson contended for a 3,000-meter steeplechase state Division I championship Saturday at Caledonia-Mumford High School.
Thompson would hang behind Jared Rousell (Webster Thomas) throughout the event that involves nearly two miles of running, high hurdles and one water jump per lap. When they crossed the line, Thompson, in nine minutes, 27.45 seconds, was second, just behind Rousell, who won his division in 9:23.77. Edward Owens, from Packard Collegiate (Division II), won the overall race in 9:15.76. leaving Thompson third overall.
Of course, Thompson was far from the only B’ville athlete taking part in the state meet. Fellow senior Andrew Hoover worked his way to 12th place in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 56.99 seconds, as Jeremiah Agyapong (DeWitt Clinton) won in 53.41 seconds.
Moving to the 4×800 relay, B’ville finished 12th here, too, as Thompson, Andrew Fleming, Alec Peinkofer and Ethan Pacheck worked together for a time of 7:56.37. Shaker (Section II) earned the victory in 7:41.47.
On the girls side, B’ville sophomore Gabrielle Jordan finished 14th in the Division I 100-meter dash in 13.04 seconds, while junior Gina Carnovale earned 17th place in the 200-meter dash in 26.12 seconds.
