For more than five seasons, the Skaneateles boys golf team had beaten every opponent in the Onondaga High School League Liberty division. But the streak finally ended Thursday afternoon, at Tuscarora Golf Club, where main rival Marcellus prevailed over the Lakers 193-198 in the first of two head-to-head battles they’ll have in a 13-day span. Earlier in the week, it appeared that the Lakers asserted its power over the Mustangs – and the rest of the league -when it prevailed at last Monday’s West Side Invitational at Bellevue Country Club. When the scores were added up, the Lakers had 156, enough to topple Marcellus (170) and Westhill (171), this despite the fact that the Mustangs’ Alec Mosher had the low individual round of 36. Eric Edmunds and Justin Sisson gave Skaneateles matching nine-hole totals of 38, while Jeff Baldetti loomed right behind with a 39. Three days later, Skaneateles was alone with Marcellus. Baldetti posted a two-under-par 34 at Tusacrora, one shot ahead of the Mustangs’ top player, Joe Felicia. Edmunds had a 37 and Sisson posted a 39, the same totals as Zach Anderson and Ryan Bonk.
Where it turned was with the fourth and fifth players. Doug Pinkney shot a 43 and Dylan Rothenberg posted a 45, but Marcellus had Adam Kinsella and Garrett Thompson shoot 41 to account for the four-shot margin. When league play resumed on Wednesday, Skaneateles held off Westhill 191-199 at Camillus Country Club. Baldetti, with a 35, edged the Warriors’ Mike Marshall by one shot for individual honors. Edmunds also had a 36, while Sisson posted a 38.
