What has already proven to be a profitable spring for the Liverpool boys and girls lacrosse teams continued Tuesday night with a sweep of both meetings with archrival Cicero-North Syracuse.
In the boys edition at Bragman Stadium, the Warriors took control in the game’s middle stages and beat the Northstars 12-6 to improve its record to 13-1. The girls edition at LHS Stadium saw Liverpool win for the second time over CNS this season, this one a 17-8 decision.
Perhaps lining itself up for the no. 2 seed in the Section III Class A playoffs that start next week, the boys Warriors fully expected CNS, with a 9-5 mark, to offer a fair amount of resistance. Sure enough, the two sides played through a 3-3 first quarter, waiting for someone to bend.
What bent was a CNS attack rendered lifeless by Liverpool’s vaunted defense. Over the course of the second and third periods, the Northstars could only manage a single goal, as shot after shot got turned away by Dominick Madonna, the Warriors’ sophomore goalie who finished with 16 saves.
As this went on, Liverpool went on a 4-0 tear through the second quarter to take the lead for good, and grew the margin to 9-3 by the fourth quarter, too much for CNS to overcome.
Austin Hope and Kyle DeAngelis each had three-goal hat tricks for the Warriors. Matt Savlov added two goals and one assist, while Joe Corapi, Nick Kline, Jeff Conley and Matt Glowacki also converted. Bryan Capone added an assist.
On the CNS side, no one had multiple goals as Rob Spenard, Mike Fiorini, Zach Waldron, Matt O’Donnell, Tyler Heldt and Ryan Houghtalen each scored once. Brian Pitonzo and Bryan Schenk split time in the net, combining for 11 saves.
As this went on, Liverpool’s girls team, continuing to sparkle on its new home turf, would improve its mark to 12-2 by stifling CNS in a contest far more lopsided than the 10-6 battle the two rivals had back on April 16 in a nonleague game at Bragman Stadium.
Sporting a relentless attack and an innate ability to win the draws, the Warriors quickly built a big lead. In fact, Liverpool topped its entire output from the first meeting by the time they reached the break, leading 11-3, so it could ease up a bit during the second half. And it did so without a goal from, arguably, its top player, Nina Tassone, who settled for a pair of assists.
As has been the case all season, the Warriors spread the production around. Four different players – Mary Fadden, Morgan Kline, Andrea Flood and Brianna Mancini – managed three-goal hat tricks, with Kristina Lombard adding two goals. Mallorie O’Brien had one goal and one assist as Anna Daucher and Bri Centro earned the other goals.
Behind all night, CNS battled to the end as Kristi Thompson put in three goals and Tiffany Ryan found the net twice. Rachel Bowles, Erin Stoddard and Jamie Ryan also had goals as Stefanie Reynolds and Meghan Wiacek combined for 10 saves, one less than the Liverpool tandem of Tess Tracy and Marissa Gabriel.
