It can safely be assumed that the Chittenango baseball team was eager to get back on the field following the early-week monsoons. And the sun stayed out long enough on Wednesday for the Bears to devastate Fulton in a 19-1 rout at DiChristina Field to improve to 6-3 on the season, 3-3 in the OHSL Freedom division. Chittenango bolted to a 6-0 lead through two innings, but saved its real damage for the bottom of the sixth, when it put Fulton away with a 12-run outburst that saw everyone contribute. Greg Jasek, in particular, had fun with four of the Bears’ 19 hits, including a home run and triple, and a career-best seven RBIs as he scored four times. Wes Burghardt also went deep and drove in four runs, while Devin Christopher and Aaron Endres earned three RBIs apiece. Zach Drake and Steve Mesmer each scored a pair of runs. All this was ample support for Jeff Pierce, who pitched a complete game that included a career-best 15 strikeouts against just two hits allowed. In softball, Chittenango sought an upset in last Monday’s trip to East Syracuse-Minoa, and nearly got it before taking a 5-4 loss to the Spartans. The Bears were down 2-0 when, in the top of the fifth, it scored three times, moving ahead 3-2. Yet that lead did not last as ESM countered with its own three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth, then held on against Chittenango’s late push. Kaleigh Koegel took the loss, despite eight strikeouts. Brandyn McDermott had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs as Alyssa Mroczek, Brittany McDonald and Jennifer Sternberg scored runs. Two days and one big rainstorm later, the Bears won again, taking out Cortland 12-1. Chittenango broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the second inning and tacked on four runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth, all in support of Koegel’s three-hit, 13-strikeout complete game. Amid a 15-hit assault, McDermott managed four of the hits, including three doubles, scored three runs and finished with four RBIs. Kiegel and Haley Landers each drove in two runs as Sternberg and Shelby Bogle also earned RBIs. Bogle and Alanna Haynes each scored two runs.
