F-M tennis wins twice; J-D beats ESM

In advance of this Thursday’s showdown with West Genesee (off to its own 8-0 start), the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team did not waver, moving its long win streak to 192 consecutive matches.

F-M dominated last Monday’s match against Oswego, sweeping past the Buccaneers 7-0. Mike Mintkosvky had the closest singles match, topping Mike Hart 6-2, 6-1. Nick Westergaard got past Austin DeMott 6-1, 6-1 as Wilbert Geng beat Ryan Patrick 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, the teams of Danny Miron-James Miron, Sam Badalina-Alex Martin, Kunal Sangani-Scott Trobert and Alex McCarthy-Eric Rosenthal lost just two games in eight sets of work.

Much the same thing happened in Friday’s 7-0 win over Nottingham, as five of the seven matches were 6-0, 6-0 decisions. Westergaard beat Justin D’Antonio 6-0, 6-1.

Also on Friday, Jamesville-DeWitt met neighbor East Syracuse-Minoa – and the Red Rams came out on top, beating the Spartans 5-2 as it was helped by a pair of singles forfeits.

The contested singles matches were split, J-D’s Andrew Lee sweeping Shane Stone 6-0, 6-0 as ESM’s Tyler Underwood outlasted David Zhang 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Jim Quartier claimed a forfeit.

A doubles classic saw the Spartans’ tandem of Brandon and Parker Stone edge Erik Davis and Reed Tso 6-7, 7-6, 10-7. Otherwise, J-D saw Amir Nazem and Steve Procopio beat Esef Hamzic and Tyler Rosso 6-3, 6-2, with Alex Katsarsky and David Rapp-Kirshner getting a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jeff Espiscopo and Mushtak Mozeb.

Earlier in the week, J-D moved to 3-0 by beating Cortland 6-1, mostly based on a doubles sweep. Allen Zhou lost in three sets to Donovan Prior 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, but Quartier handled Kyle Davis 6-1, 6-4, with Abraham Davis and Jack Alexander dropping just one game in their singles wins over, respectively, Kyle Fussner and James Williams.

On Tuesday, J-D beat Homer by that same 6-1 margin, denied the sweep when Tso had a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Keefe Garrett in singles play. Otherwise, the Red Rams won every match in two sets, anchored by Abraham Davis fighting past Riley Bauer 6-4, 7-5. Nazem and Procopio worked hard in doubles to beat Bob Chambrone and Allen Perry 6-1, 7-5.

CBA could manage just one point in last Monday’s 4-1 defeat to Cazenovia, as in singles Colin Nardella dominated Lee Cudney 6-0, 6-1. The Brothers had to forfeit a singles match, though, and in doubles Ash Kamani and Dan Mantooth fell to Crozer Connor and John Lyga 6-4, 7-6. Joel Castellini and Paul Mullen had a 6-3, 7-5 defeat to Pat Marris and Noah Zimsmeister.

ESM lost to Homer 5-2, swept in all four doubles matches. Singles proved a bit different, though, as Parker Stone beat Bauer 6-1, 6-4, while Brandon Stone rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jeff Eves.

Though it was closer Tuesday, the Spartans fell to Fulton 4-3. Parker and Brandon Stone again both won in straight sets, and this time Underwood contributed a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Doug Sherwood. But the Red Raiders won every doubles match in straight sets.

Bishop Grimes arrived last Tuesday and beat LaFayette by that familiar 4-1 margin. Between them, Matt Miller, Mike Bespiaty and Greg Ostaszewski dominated with straight-set singles wins, while Christian Freeman and Sean Kilpatrick topped Evan DeRosier and Ashley Scholes 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in doubles competition. The Cobras dropped a 7-0 non-league match to West Genesee on Thursday.

Manlius-Pebble Hill returned on Tuesday for its own 4-1 win, this time over Onondaga. Tristan Amond and Tyler Greco held off Sarah Grillo and Max Konstantanidi 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, with Alex French-Lawyer and Ben Parks topping Eric Rush and Alexis Smith 7-5, 6-2. Justin Oh and Ethan Rothschild both won in straight sets as Jon Koss fell to Kyle Stapleton 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Then MPH defeated LaFayette in yet another 4-1 decision on Thursday afternoon, aided by Koss, Oh and Rothschild all winning their singles matches in straight sets. French-Lawyer and Parks put together a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 doubles win over Dave DePalma and Tyler Verzosa.
