In very different ways, the Fayetteville-Manlius and Jamesville-DeWitt girls indoor track and field teams found their way to Section III championships Saturday at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House.
The Hornets relied on n its deep and incomparable pool of distance runners and amassed 108 points to fend off Cicero-North Syracuse (100 points) and 11 other challengers for the top spot.
Meanwhile, the Red Rams left imprints in many different events, finishing with 111 points, well clear of Westhill/Bishop Ludden (80 points) and the rest of the field.
F-M went 1-2, and picked up 18 points, in the 600-meter run, where Heather Martin prevailed in 1:37.24, just ahead of Sischo (1:38.55) in second place. Martin also won the 300-meter dash in 43.34 seconds and Natalie Zazzara was fourth (45.15 seconds).
Also, the Hornets had 24 points in a single event – the 1,000-meter run. There, Katie Sischo won in a time of 3:02.63, with Jillian Fanning second in 3:02.77 as Leah Monsour took fourth place and Emily McGurrin finished fifth.
And 18 more points were earned in the 1,500-meter run, where Fanning edged West Genesee’s Laura Leff, 4:42.92 to 4:43.21, for the top spot, with Monsour third in 4:56.25 and McGurrin again in fifth place. Maggie Malone was third in the 3,000-meter run in 10:41.57 and Jenna Farrell (11:07.10) was fifth.
Add to that a 4×800 relay where Fanning, Sischo, Malone and McGurrin roared to victory in 9:55.31 (no one else broke the 10-minute mark), and a 4×400 relay where Zazzara, Martin, Isabelle Carapella and Molly Levy prevailed in 4:14.60, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the field, and F-M had most of the points it needed. The Hornets added a fourth in the 4×200 relay as Jhoville Pommels took fifth in the shot put.
J-D, on its way to the top, won two field events. Danielle Doss cleared 9 feet to win the pole vault, where Katy Pieri (7 feet 6 inches) was third. Sierra Vasilou threw the shot put 34 feet 2 1/4 inches to beat the field by more than two feet.
Maggie Fuller contributed more points by tying East Syracuse-Minoa’s Nina Zesky for second in the high jump, both clearing 5 feet, whle Liz Pieri got second in the triple jump by going 30 feet 7 3/4 inches. Ally Fox had a fourth-place long jump of 15 feet 3 inches.
Working together, Fox, Vasilou, Fuller and Danielle Doss earned a victory in the 4×200 relay in 1:53.79, beating runner-up Homer by more than three seconds. In the 4×400, Doss joined Liz Pieri, Katy Pieri and Noelle Novakowski as J-D prevailed in 4:24.33, with New Hartford 2.60 seconds behind.
More points were attained in the 300-meter dash, where Liz Pieri won in 44.30 seconds and Katy Pieri was third in 45.29 seconds.
Ameena Dye, Becca Doss, Hannah Stefl and Avery Share were third in the 4×800 (10:30.52), as Dye, on her own, took third in the 1,500 (5:09.48). Fox was third in the 55 sprint (7.76 seconds), with Vasilou in fourth.Taylor Cook got fifth in the 55-meter hurdles, with Becca Doss fifth in the 600.
CBA was fifth in last Friday’s Class B championships with 32 points. Betty Etheredge won the long jump, going 15 feet 8 inches, and matched Clinton’s Eliza Bell by having a top triple jump of 33 feet 8 inches.
Corey Hucko was third in the 3,000 in 11:27.58, with Michaela Gildemeyer third in the 600 in 1:46.46. Gabriel Schugg was fifth in the 1,000.
