Rested and ready for more action, the Cazenovia field hockey cast aside more foes.
Win no. 51 in a row against OHSL opponents came on Wednesday, against Port Byron at the Burton Street Elementary School, where the Lakers blanked the Panthers 5-0.
Jillian Vogl had a central role as Cazenovia sprinted out to a 3-0 halftime edge and maintained the pressure all afternoon. Vogl finished with two goals and two assists, her passes going to Tori Widrick, who also found the net twice.
Jessy Silfer earned Cazenovia’s other goal as Abby Eschen joined Vogl with two assists. The work of Port Byron goalie Kellie Redmond, who had 19 saves, prevented further damage.
Meanwhile, Vernon Verona Sherrill had started the season 0-2, its struggles augmented by running into defending Class B champion Camden Tuesday and taking a 6-0 loss to the Blue Devils.
These two sides had met in the last two Section III Class B finals – VVS winning in 2008, Camden prevailing in 2009, both by 1-0 margins – but in this case it was clear which side was better.
Camden forward Kianne Hinkle led her side with three goals and one assist, aided by Kelsey Forbragd and Holly VanDresar, both of whom had a goal and two assists. VVS used a pair of goalies, as Megan Alley and Ellen Depasquale each made four saves.
But the Red Devils would quickly turn things around, going to Clinton on Wednesday and beating the Warriors by a 3-1 margin, and Ashley Palmer was primarily responsible.
Palmer’s goal gave VVS a 1-0 lead in the first half. When Clinton threatened and got on the board in the second half (Vanessa Wheeler-Lopez scored), Palmer countered by finding the net twice more to complete her hat trick.
