Starting just before the Labor Day weekend, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool girls volleyball teams had differing results.
The Northstars swept Utica Proctor 25-9, 25-14, 25-16 in its opener. Meghan Ross gathered up 10 assists, plus four kills and four aces, while Stephanie Gagnon served up seven aces to go with three kills and two digs. Lindsey Silfer had six assists, four kills and three assists. Alex Silfer got six kills and Cara Gannett added five blocks.
Liverpool, meanwhile, served as the first opponent for long-time Class B power Cazenovia, who moved to a fall schedule for 2010.
The Warriors lost a four-game decision at Buckley Gym, dropping the first game 25-18 and a long second game 29-27. Despite facing some match points, Liverpool won the third game 30-28, only to have the Lakers turn around and dominate the fourth game 25-14.
Dorothy Rosekrans had 11 kills, as Jenna Street set up those points on her way to 22 assists. Brooke Holland (13 digs), Paige Calabrese (12 digs) and Rachel Ruggaber (11 digs) all played strong defense as Chelsea Lauria, with 24 assists, and Lizzy Reed, with 10 kills and 19 digs, led Cazenovia’s push.
On the boys side, CNS started with back-to-back defeats to Midlakes and Penfield, but turned around on Tuesday night and beat Liverpool in a three-game sweep.
Once it got past a 27-25 first game, the Northstars rolled through the next two games 25-14 and 25-19. Jim Coleman registered 31 assists, feeding it to Ethan Irish, who earned 11 kills and six aces, and Tyler A. Smith, who had 10 kills. Billy Werksman added four kills and Kevin Bane had four digs.
