The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a car crash that claimed the lives of Ronald Mabb, 68, and his passenger Marlene Demay, 67, of Elbridge Wednesday afternoon.
The crash took place at approximately 1:55 p.m. in front of the Dollar General located at 1160 Route 5 in Elbridge when Kevin Lamay II, 26, of Rome drove a tractor trailer into the back of the 2009 Kia being driven by Mabb, causing it to burst into flames.
Upon impact, the Kia was forced into a pickup truck being driven by Michael Lockwood, 31, of Wolcott. Lockwood suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Lamay and his passenger, John Barringer, 33, of West Winfield were not injured.
Mabb’s car had been stuck in traffic due to an accident that occurred at 1:30 p.m near the intersection of Route 5 and Sandbank Road. At the time of the crash, Sheriff’s Deputies assisting New York State Police with traffic ran back to the heavily damaged Kia but were unable to free Mabb and Demay from the burning wreckage.
Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh expects the investigation to take nearly two weeks to complete due to the magnitude of the crash.
