A yet-to-be identified type of algae has surfaced in Skaneateles Lake. Sue Scovell first spotted it in the water when she was kayaking near her dock off Starboard Way, on the West side of the lake, a few weeks ago.
Scovell has been swimming in Skaneateles Lake for 11 years and said she has never seen anything like it. She reported her findings to both the Syracuse Water Department and the Department of Environmental Conservation. Rich Abbott of the water department collected the algae and delivered it to a researcher at SUNY ESF for further study.
“This is such a pristine lake and the people of Syracuse depend on it for drinking water, and I just don’t want to see it polluted,” Scovell said.
