The 2nd annual Teal There’s a Cure 5K fun run/walk returns to Marcellus next month, with a new timing system, prizes for the top finishers and even more enthusiasm than the inaugural event.
The July 4 race begins at 9 a.m. in Upper Marcellus Park. The course winds through the village of Marcellus, up Limerick Street, down Main Street and back to the park to finish.
Runners and walkers will also be encouraged and educated about ovarian and gynecological cancers, for which the race serves as a fundraiser, by signs posted throughout the course.
Proceeds will go to ovarian cancer research and to a local ovarian and gynecological cancer support group, Grace’s Garden.
Timing this year will be provided by Leone Timing, a feature race organizer Kevin O’Hara was excited to offer participants.
Last year, the effort raised $15,000 and around 300 people took part, O’Hara said.
A little less than a month before the 2010 event, more than 100 people had already registered, he added.
Along with registrations, donations from local businesses have been pouring in, O’Hara said.
Cost to participate is $15 before June 23, then increases to $20.
