Winston Gaskin Community Walk for Wellness Begins on the Eve of Juneteenth
The Juneteenth Committee and 100 Black Men of Syracuse Inc. will hold the Winston Gaskin Community Walk for Wellness on Friday June 18 at 5 p.m. starting at the parking lot of Syracuse University’s Manley Field House. The walk will end at Jubilee Park on South Avenue. Motor vehicles cannot participate in the walk. Centro will provide transportation back to Manley Field House.
The Winston Gaskin Community Walk for Wellness is free and open to the public. The purpose of the walk is to encourage both young and seasoned, to enjoy the benefits of walking. The distance is three miles and 100 meters, and will take approximately one hour. Centro and Crouse Hospital are supporting the walk. There will be gifts and health information given away.
The Winston Gaskin Walk participants will walk down East Colvin Street to Garfield Avenue. From Garfield Avenue, the participants will continue to Castle Street, and then to Midland Avenue and on to Bellevue Avenue. The last leg of the walk will take the participants to South Avenue and end at Jubilee Park.
The walk is named in honor of Winston Gaskin, the first African American pharmacist, who, in 1964, opened Gaskin’s Prescription Pharmacy and Gaskin’s Beauty & Barber Supply at 607 South Ave. He served as a former president of the Central City Businessmen’s Association, founder of Housing Visions Unlimited, former chairman of The Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals during the Mayor Lee Alexander administration. In addition, Gaskin served on the boards of Dunbar Center, Syracuse’s N.A.A.C.P., Board of Directors of the Onondaga Office of Aging, and a gardener for the Syracuse Rose Society.
Winston Gaskin died on April 4, 2009, in Woodbridge, Virginia at 87. He resided in Syracuse for 43 years.
