While it might seem routine and monotonous to those outside its realm, there’s no denying the vast accomplishment that the West Genesee boys lacrosse team is on the brink of achieving. When the Wildcats face Corcoran Friday night in the Section III Class A final at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium, it could earn its ninth consecutive sectional championship. Such a streak is built on caring about the game’s small details, as coaches Mike Messere and Bob Deegan have done for decades. It also involves respecting every opponent, regardless of ther record. In Tuesady night’s Class A semifinal at CNS, the no. 2 seed Wildcats got the best shot of no. 6 seed Liverpool and still came up with a 10-5 victory over the Warriors. Liverpool had knocked off no. 3 seed Baldwinsville 10-9 to get this far, and stayed within range throughout the first half, proving to be a more difficult foe than when they first met on April 13. Still, WG’s steady production, and ability to answer every time Liverpool converted, led to a 6-3 halftime lead. And when the Wildcats’ defense clamped down and blanked the Warriors in the third quarter, it had a safe margin. John Glesener and Dylan Donahue each had three goals, with Glesener adding a pair of assists. Corey Herrington produced two goals and one assist as Tim Barber and Chris Murphy also scored. WG goalie Scott Sidnam had, arguably, his best game so far, turning away 17 of the 22 shots he faced. Right after beating Liverpool, WG watched as Corcoran knocked off top seed Fayetteville-Manlius 13-10, the second time the Cougars had beaten the Hornets in less than three weeks. Now Corcoran has the rare chance to beat both F-M and West Genesee twice in the same season (it won a 12-11 overtime decision over the Wildcats back on April 6) — and grab its first-ever sectional title while ending the Wildcats’ reign.
