Only one thing could have possibly topped the Marcellus boys track and field team laying claim to Friday’s Section III Class B-1 championship – and that was accomplishing the feat on its home track. Indeed, the Mustangs would fight off eight of its guests for the B-1 title, earning 106.5 points. Westhill was third with 86 points, edged out by Clinton (87.5 points) for the runner-up spot, as Solvay took fifth place with 54 points. Mike Quercia led the Mustangs’ winning effort. He won the 200-meter dash in a swift 22.43 seconds, claimed the triple jump by going 42 feet 5 1/4 inches and teamed with Tom Riccardi, Jesse Garn and Ryan Manahan to break the eight-minute mark and prevail in the 4×800 relay in 7:59.41. In the 4×100 relay, Marcellus gained another title as Nate Waite, Kevin Daily, Brad Kermes and Mitch Schoenbrun finished in 46.12 seconds, more than a second ahead of the field. Daily and Waite joined Manahan and Justin Garn by claiming third place (3:38.29) in the 4×400 relay. On his own, Schoenbrun was third in the 100-meter dash (11.62 seconds), with Waite taking fifth to go with his sixth behind Quercia in the 200. Daily was sixth in the 800-meter run. Garn would win, too, covering the mile in 4:22.57 as John Bell finished third in 4:42.94. In the pole vault, Nick Huss earned the victory by clearing 12 feet as teammate Rob Coon finished fifth. Quercia also tied teammate Brian O’Connell for second by clearing 5 feet 8 inches in the high jump. Also for the Mustangs, Keith Shields took fourth in the 110 high hurdles (16.66 seconds) and Zach Wiley was fifth in the shot put. Westhill saw Kevin Zych win the 3,200 in 10:05.23, with Jon Moore in fourth place. Zych added a second-place finish, (4:29.91), behind Garn, in the mile. In the 4×400, Jack Honis, Ryan Brennan, Peter Clark and Matt Trendowski won in 3:30.93, more than seven seconds ahead of runner-up Hannibal. Tom Fisher tied South Jefferson’s Louis Kendall with 130-foot throws in the discus and was second in the shot put (47 feet 9 1/2 inches). In the 400-meter dash, Westhill saw Trendowski finish second in 53.09 seconds, with Clark third (53.81 seconds) and Brennan (54.23 seconds) in fourth place. Trendowski also ran to fourth place in the 200. Honis took third in the 110 high hurdles (16.45 seconds), and added a fourth in the 400 hurdles. Alex Phelan was third in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet. Solvay went 1-2 in the 400 hurdles, John Salvagno winning in 59.19 seconds, edging out Ed Buczakowski (59.33) for the top spot as Bill Bigalow took fifth place. C.J. Brooks earned the victory in the shot put, his throw of 52 feet 10 1/2 inches topping Fisher and the rest of the field. Jerry Santoferrara cleared 11 feet 6 inches for second place in the shot put. Matt Cregan was third in the 3,200 (10:50.17), with Matt Fedrizzi third in the 800 (2:00.86). Xander Nappi took fourth in the 100 in 11.72 seconds. Jordan-Elbridge competed in Class B-2 and earned 72.5 points for third place, well off Holland Patent’s winning total of 207.5 points. Cody Stanton earned a victory in the 3,200, his time of 9:39.69 beating the field by more than 13 seconds. Andrew Conlan nearly won the 100, edged by HP’s Craig Ashcroft, 11.49 seconds to 11.50, as Conlan also got third place in the 200 in 23.38 seconds. Paul Nelson claimed second place in the B-2 pentathlon, earning 2,385 points. Mike Marrero ran to second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:23.17, with Steve Slonosky (10:33.47) in third place. Greg Bader took third in the 800 in 2:03.82. Carlin Coomey was third in the 400 (54.49 seconds) as Bader, Coomey, Marrero and Conlan were third in the 4×400 relay (3:40.13), with the Eagles also fourth in the 4×100 and sixth in the 4×800. Andrew Forward earned fifth place in the triple jump, going 39 feet, and also was sixth in the high jump, with Tyler May sixth in the shot put.
