West Genesee’s softball team now finds itself a mere two victories from a Section III Class AA championship. Bishop Ludden isn’t as close on the Class C-1 side, but like the Wildcats, it began its post-season run on Thursday with a high-quality win. WG, the no. 4 seed in Class AA, used a seventh-inning run to eliminate no. 5 seed Baldwinsville 3-2, while Ludden, who gained the no. 2 seed in Class C-2, blanked no. 10 seed Weedsport 4-0 in the quarterfinal round. In Camillus, the Wildcats and B’ville were close all the way through, settling into a low-scoring contest after the Bees scored once in the top of the first inning and WG answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Even though the Wildcats had twice as many hits (10, to B’ville’s five), pitchers Ashley Amidon and Cassie Williams matched each other with 12 strikeouts, and the Bees tied it up, 2-2, with a run in the top of the sixth. On the brink of facing extra frames, WG won it in the bottom of the seventh as Gabby Rivers singled, reached second base, then raced home with the decisive run on Trish Andrews’ single. Over in Geddes, Ludden knew that Weedsport was a tricky opening playoff foe. The week before, the Gaelic Knights needed Korey Kibling’s no-hitter to outlast Jordan Roe and the Warriors in a 1-0 thriller. Here, Ludden would get to Roe for a pair of first-inning runs, then score twice more in the bottom of the sixth. Kayla Kibling had a double, triple and RBI, whlie Catie Graf also got a pair of hits, joining Kim Balla in the RBI column. As for Korey Kibling, he had a hit and a run scored to back up a three-hit shutout as he fanned seven Weedsport hitters. Roe had seven strikeouts, too. In Saturday’s C-2 semifinal, Ludden meets long-time power Sandy Creek, the no. 3 seed, with the winner to get Fabius-Pompey or Mohawk in next week’s championship round.
