Three local girls track and field teams — from Vernon Verona Sherrill, Oneida and Chittenango — gathered at the Bears’ home for the May 27 Section III Class A-2 championship meet. The Red Devils rose up to second place in A-2, earning 97 points, as only Camden (122.33 points) fared better. Meanwhile, the Indians took fourth place with 74.33 points and Chittenango, with 60 points, claimed sixth place. Rachel Brown and Tammy Beal went 1-2 in the 100-meter high hurdles, as Brown won in 16.80 seconds and Beal (17.19 seconds) finished second. Lauren MacDonald gave VVS a victory in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 11:32.97, with Emily Hudson (13:08.34) in fourth place. MacDonald added a fourth in the 1,500-meter run. Elaine Slaven earned her own title in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.67, while taking second place in the high jump (4 feet 10 inches) and earning fourth place in the 200-meter dash. Slaven, Maggie Curtis, Rachel Brown and Gabbie Koons took second in the 4×100 relay in 52.77 seconds.
McKenna Novak earned second place in the pentathlon, finishing with 1,901 points, just 13 behind New Hartford’s Alexandra Tizzano, with Kayla Fazekas in sixth place. Jenna Fiacco was fifth in the shot put and sixth in the discus. Casey Kane was third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:36.09, with Brooke Waite in sixth place. Beal was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:12.44 and Kerry Miley took fifth in the 800-meter run. VVS got fourth in the 4×400 relay (4:25.52), with Miley, Curtis, Koons and Beal taking part, and fifth in the 4×800 relay. Oneida earned lots of points in field events. Taylor Youngkrans won the discus, heaving it 95 feet 8 inches, as Rachael Kline (81 feet 6 inches) was third. Kline added a second in the shot put (33 feet 7 1/4 inches, a quarter of an inch ahead of Youngkrans, as she tied for sixth in the high jump and also got sixth in the 100 hurdles. The Indians also went to the top in the 4×800 relay with a time of 10:33.94, then added a second-place finish in the 4×400 as Shannon Harrington, Sara Rifendifer, Mackeznie Lynch and Rachael Wurst had a time of 4:20.50. Jordan Armstrong was second in the long jump (15 feet 9 1/2 inches), with Vivian Thurston fifth, this after Thurston tied for third in the pole vault. Rifendifer was fourth in the 800 (2:30.12), as Armstrong added a fifth in the 100. Kim DeCarr took fifth in the 1,500 and Lynch earned fifth in the 400. Chittenango’s Brittany Tirabassi won the pole vault, the only competitor to clear 8 feet, and got fifth place in the 100 hurdles (17.52 seconds). Courtney Dyer was third in the 100 in 13.22 seconds and helped Alyssa Giarosso, Meredith Furtado and Theresa Parascendola claim third place in the 4×100 relay in 52.78 seconds. Alyssa Endres threw the discus 90 feet 4 inches, taking second place as Alex Paige (78 feet) was fourth. Alyssa Giarosso ran to fifth in the 200 (28.01 seconds) as Kaitlyn Alongi, Alissa Levens-Freeman, Jordan Donnelly and Caity Foster finished third in the 4×800 in 10:54.57.
Christie Nourse got third place in the pentathlon with 1,762 points. Katherine Milliman was fourth in the long jump (14 feet 2 3/4 inches) and Maize Zamlowski was sixth in the triple jump.
