In their own different manners, the Christian Brothers Academy and East Syracuse-Minoa baseball teams saw the 2010 season end on Thursday afternoon in the Section III Class A quarterfinals – and both at the expense of teams from the Tri-Valley League. Even with the top seed in Class A, the Brothers could not hold back no. 9 seed Whitesboro as, led by Brendan Heitz, shocked CBA 5-4. As for the no. 5 seed Spartans, it had solid production against no. 4 seed Oneida, but could not counter a rough third inning in a 9-5 loss to the Indians. Right from the moment the playoff pairings came out, CBA was wary of facing Whitesboro, who had enjoyed much recent success in the post-season and outscored Indian River 12-10 in the opening round. They had good reason. Heitz’s hot hitting (an RBI single in the third and a two-run single in the fifth) led to the Warriors hanging close, even though CBA led most of the way, getting two hits from both Pat Wiese and Riley Dixon. Luke Alletzhauser had the Brothers three outs from victory when, with one on and nobody out in the top of the seventh, Heitz returned – and crushed a two-run home run that proved to be the game-winner. Whitesboro pitcher M.J. Hajec recorded the final outs and improved his season mark to 6-1 with seven strikeouts. Alletzhauser had four strikeouts. ESM, meanwhile, was playing at Oneida, and appeared to be working itself from an early trouble spot when it scored two runs in the top of the third to close within 3-2. However, the Indians responded with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the third, forcing Pete Gigliotti to take the loss despite some late Spartan production. ESM finished at 13-9 for the season, having split its two meetings with CBA, who ended up 16-3.
