One last time, the inability to produce at the plate would catch up to the Christian Brothers Academy and East Syracuse-Minoa softball teams. Both teams would fall out of the Section III playoffs Thursday as no. 8 seeds – the Brothers beaten 2-1 by General Brown in Class B at Nottingham High School, the Spartans falling 4-1 to Whitesboro in Class A. In the case of CBA (12-7), the defeat ruined what had been, for seven innings, a first-rate effort by pitcher Jordan Sheridan. Despite allowing a handful of hits, Sheridan, with 14 strikeouts, kept General Brown off the board. But the Brothers could not take advantage of this – and it the top of the eighth, paid for it. General Brown’s Lindsay Hanson singled, moved to second and third, then bolted home with the game’s first run on a wild pitch. Then Desarie Rolfe reached base and came around to score on Chelsea Monroe’s double. Still, CBA had a chance, cutting the margin to one in the bottom of the eighth as Marisa Hamel doubled and scored on Marisa Mosley’s single. But the Lions got the final outs, negating the two hits Sheridan and Claire Golegly each put up. Over at ESM, the Spartans did get on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Malorie Stone earned the RBI and Amy Barkausas scored. That would be it, though, as Whitesboro chased Mallory Martino with two runs in the top of the fourth, then added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings off Kelly Smith. Combined, they allowed five hits as ESM finished with a record of 9-12.
