Every year, we set aside a day to honor America’s fallen military veterans.
On Monday, the Robert J. Hydon Post 239 American Legion of Skaneateles will host the annual Memorial Day parade and service. As Third Vice-Commander, Brad McLennan is responsible for overseeing the organization and execution of the annual ceremonies and parade.
McLennan served in the Air Force for 20 years.
“The parade and ceremonies are a focused opportunity for all Americans to reflect on our freedoms and how they have been preserved through the selfless sacrifices of our fallen Veterans,” McLennan said. “We march as a tribute to those who cannot. It affirms what is required of any society to defend and maintain its culture and way of life.”
All veterans as well as members of the American Legion — past and present — are invited to participate in the parade and service. Parade marchers are encouraged to wear any service uniform or appropriate coat and slacks.
The parade will assemble at 9 a.m. at the Skaneateles American Legion Post on Jordan Road. Marchers will first move across the street to St. Mary’s Cemetery for a brief service, then follow Jordan Street to the village.
The parade will move through the village and turn west on Genesee Street to the Lakeview Cemetery for another brief service.
Lastly, the parade will proceed back through the village to the Veterans Memorial in Shotwell Park for the Memorial Day service and address. Col. Kevin W. Bradley, commander for the 174th Fighter Wing at Hancock Airfield, will speak.
“I am always reminded of the honor serving with my fellow airmen and aviators, soldiers and sailors who continually impressed me with their dedication to duty, perseverance and integrity,” McLennan said.
Following the parade and service, refreshments will be served during an open house at the American Legion Post.
