Backed by post-season experience and its own proven ability to pull out close games, the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team was a no. 2 seed in the Section III Class C-2 playoffs that would be difficult to get rid of. In Monday night’s opening round of the C-2 tournament, the Lakers met playoff newcomer LaFayette and, despite some shaky defense, found its way past the Lancers 21-13. Hot conditions on the new Skaneateles turf seemed to wear out both defensive sides, producing a first half that included 22 goals, nearly one per minute. The Lakers controlled a majority of the draws, and that helped produce a 14-8 margin by halftime. All through the second half, Skaneateles protected that margin while slowing things down enough to prevent any sustained run on LaFayette’s part. Diane Vitkus produced seven goals, adding an assist as Maddy Morrissey and Shelby McNeilly each found the net three times. Erin Callahan backed up her two goals with three assists. Aly Davis scored twice, adding one assist, while Grace Kelly, Carly Davis, Claire Motyl and Emma Ford had single goals. For LaFayette, Cassley Jackowski had four goals, while Brenna Murray and Maddison Appel each got three goals. In Wednesday’s C-2 semifinal, Skaneateles met no. 6 seed Westhill, who wanted to avenge two regular-season losses to the Lakers, including a triple-overtime epic on May 18. The Warriors had already atoned for a last-second loss to Jordan-Elbridge by eliminating the Eagles 12-8 in the opening round.
