Now poised to defend its title in the Section III Class B playoffs, the Canastota softball team first had to go through a bit more regular-season duty. That included last Tuesday’s visit to Cooperstown, which saw pitcher Jessica Patterelli pick up a no-hitter as the Raiders shut down the Redskins 8-0. During her gem, Patterelli allowed just one walk, but amassed 13 strikeouts. She also sparked Canastota in a five-run second inning that accounted for all the necessary offense. At the plate, Patterelli tripled, doubled and finished with two RBIs. Andrea Underwood tripled and drove in three runs, while Valerie Baer, Allie Brenier and Alicia Hibbard had one RBI apiece. A day earlier, the Raiders hosted Rome Catholic last Monday afternoon and, again, unleashed a lot of offense in a 13-0 shutout of the Red Wings. A four-run first inning was convincing enough, but Canastota doubled that total in the bottom of the second, scoring eight times to make it 12-0. Of the Raiders’ 14 hits, half came from Hibbard and Patterelli. Hibbard had a double and three singles, earning four RBIs, while Patterelli drove in three runs through a triple, double and single. Kelsey Lawrence also had three RBIs as Bernier, Baer, Samantha McCarthy, Emily Harp, Alexis Havens also drove in runs. Patterelli and Valerie Baer both pitched, getting nine strikeouts between them. In baseball, Canastota would pursue the Center State Conference title in Tuesday’s game against Cooperstown at Doubleday Field, only to fall short in a 10-5 loss to the Redskins. The Raiders led, 2-1, before Cooperstown went ahead for good with five runs in the bottom of the third, forcing starter Billy Marsh from the game. Jeff Merrell relieved, but the Redskins added three more runs in the fourth to make it 9-2. Fighting to the end, the Raiders still had Jake LaBarre put up three hits and Alex Foster two hits, the pair each earning one RBI. Prior to that, the Raiders had split a pair of games, losing 9-0 to Holland Patent on May 15 as it got just four hits against the Golden Knights and gave up six of those runs in the first two innings. Rich Mitchell took the loss, with Marsh and Foster seeing relief duty. But Canastota had no trouble with Rome Catholic last Monday afternoon, ripping past the Red Wings by an 11-3 margin. Though Rome Catholic tagged pitcher Cameron Haddad for a pair of early runs, Haddad settled down and threw a complete game, giving up seven hits overall. A 2-2 tie got broken for good when Canastota posted five runs in the bottom of the second, most of them coming home on Marsh’s three-run triple. Sam Stagnitti finished with two RBIs as Jake LaBarre and Kyle Sandford joined Marsh in the two-hit column. And after the Cooperstown loss, Canastota closed out regular-season play by beating Herkimer 7-5 Friday afternoon, rallying from a 3-1 deficit with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings as, for the second time in a week, Haddad earned the win. The Raiders take an 11-7 record into the sectional playoffs. For the Class B playoffs, Canastota’s baseball team owns the no. 4 seed and could play at home twice. If the Raiders beat no. 13 seed Mount Markham in the first round, it will host Skaneateles or Utica-Notre Dame in the quarterfinals. Canastota’s softball team also is a no. 4 seed, meeting no. 13 seed Ilion in the first round. The winner gets South Jefferson or Solvay in the quarterfinals.
