Both early and late, the Jamesville-DeWitt softball team pulled off Monday afternoon what it could not do in 10 innings of work the first time around – namely, get runs against Christian Brothers Academy.
Earning a key late-season win, the Red Rams beat the Brothers 8-2, and gained some payback for the 1-0 loss to CBA back on April 20 where Jenn Keeler registered 20 strikeouts – and still lost to freshman Jordan Sheridan.
A month later, J-D broke its drought against Sheridan with a single run in the top of the first inning, then tacked on two more runs in the third to make it 3-0.
Sheridan still displayed her power, recording 16 strikeouts, but again did not get any run support until the seventh inning.
By then, J-D had put it away, thanks to a five-run outburst in the top of the seventh. Keeler, helping her own cause, while Rachel Honis and Christina Oaster also drove in runs. Tessa Devereaux and Mary Young joined Keeler in the two-hit column, with Devereaux also scoring three runs.
Keeler lost her shutout in the seventh, but still matched Sheridans’ total of 16 strikeouts, negating the seven hits and five walks she allowed.
As this went on, CBA’s baseball team, further tightening its grip on first place in the OHSL Freedom division, went out Monday and beat J-D 9-0, propelled by Tim Hobb’s career-best effort on the mound.
Going all seven innings, Hobb only allowed two hits and two walks, striking out five as he patiently waited for the offensive help.
CBA obliged in the top of the third, tagging Justin Marzella for four runs, then adding four more runs in the fifth and a tally in the sixth.
Bryant Moore’s pair of hits led to four RBIs. Pat Wiese doubled, tripled and drove in three runs as Shaun McGraw hit the game’s only home run, scoring twice as he got a pair of RBIs.
