When Dawn Bresani moved to Grimes Road in Elbridge in August 2008, she envisioned a quiet life in the country.
Instead, she told the Elbridge Town Board last week, she has endured months of loud music at all hours from a neighboring house and found she has no recourse under town law.
Bersani said she has called local and state police more than 20 times, and been told each time by officers that the most they can do is ask the neighbor to turn down their music — if they choose not to, Bersani is out of luck.
She attended the May 5 town board meeting to request the board to look into a noise ordinance.
“It’s not fun, I can’t enjoy my house,” Bersani said. “Its not much a life to live out in the country when there are noises going on you can’t do anything about.”
Bersani pointed out that noise ordinances are in place in Manlius, Madison County and Rochester, and would be both fair and enforceable.
She refrained from naming the noisy neighbor, but town Code Enforcement Officer Bob Herrmann said he knew the resident in question — in fact, he had sent a letter to the household requesting the residents keep their volume at a reasonable level.
Town Councilor Bill Kuhn said a noise ordinance would require local police agencies to use a decibel meter and recording device, without which they wouldn’t be able to enforce the law.
“You’re not the first who has had this issue,” Supervisor Ken Bush, Jr. told Bersani. The board agreed to look into the issue and suggested Bersani try to record the excessive noise.
