Here was the week where, if the weather behaved, the Cazenovia boys tennis team would find out if it could keep the top spot in the OHSL Liberty division. The first big moment came on Wednesday, at Christian Brothers Academy, where the Lakers took its first loss of the season to the Brothers in a narrow 3-2 decision. Nick Christakos earned a point in singles, sweeping past Alex Ojugbeli 6-3, 6-3, while Lee Cudney and Sam Conicila teamed up in doubles for a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dan Mantooth and Ash Kamani. But with Jon Cipiti and Chris Rogers both losing singles matches in straight sets, it hinged on third doubles, which went to a decisive tie-breaker in the third set. Crozer Connor and Jon Lyga won the first set 6-3 over CBA’s duo of Joel Castellini and Paul Mullin, only to fall in the second set by that same margin. In the final set, regulation did not decide things, but in the tie-breaker Castellini and Mullin pulled it out 7-3 to win the match 7-6. Prior to the big matches, the Lakers met Marcellus last Monday and, except for a singles slip, handled things in a 4-1 victory over the Mustangs. Lyga rallied in singles for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Brian Swierczek, while Christakos routed Brett Vergana 6-1, 6-0. Connor lost to James Garzia 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. On the doubles side, Concilla and Cudney teamed up to beat Brian Kershaw and Shane Barner 6-0, 7-5, while Cipiti and Rogers teamed up to beat Jack Kranz and Kyle McVey 6-1, 6-0.
