Two days after the Liverpool girls track and field team won at Baldwinsville, it was the boys turn to head to Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium – and it would win, too.
With Zavon Watkins in full flight, the Warriors took out the Bees 85-56. In the mile, Watkins edged out teammate Colin Savage, 4:24.6 to 4:24.8, then went to the 800 and finished in 2:04 flat, again winning by 0.2 seconds, this time over Alex Wilke. Watkins also cleared 5 feet 10 inches for second place to B’ville star Brian Kane (6 feet 6 inches) in the high jump.
Savage would get his moment in the 3,200-meter run, pulling away from the field to prevail in 10:23.9, and he would team with Watkins, Keewan Rondinello and Chris Clemons to earn another victory in 3:28.8.
Rondinello had his own big moment in the 400-meter sprint, winning in 53.2 seconds as Clemons (53.8 seconds) capped yet another important 1-2 finish.
Joe Spernyak dominated the 110 hgih hurdles in 15.5 seconds, then went to the 400 hurdles and held off B’ville star Andrew Hoover, 57.6 seconds to 57.9, in one of the fastest head-to-head duels anywhere this season.
Tony Shuler took over the jumping events, going 41 feet 1 inch in the triple jump and winning the long jump with a leap of 18 feet 10 1/2 inches. Jason Osborne prevailed in the shot put, tossing it 50 feet 4 inches, while Joe Alvarado added a victory in the pole vault when he cleared 10 feet 6 inches.
This sets up Liverpool for next week’s showdown against rival Cicero-North Syracuse at Bragman Stadium.
