A week before it would welcome defending Class A champion West Genesee to Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team first had to take care of a small chore in Solvay.
The Bees went to Earl Hadley Stadium to face Liverpool, using “The Pit” as its home field until its new turf (just laid down) is fully ready for 2011. It proved to be a tough contest, but B’ville had enough to beat the Warriors 12-10.
Having lost at home to Brighton on April 30, the Bees’ method of recovery was enduring a Liverpool squad still learning under first-year coach Elizabeth Acee.
B’ville fought its way to a 7-5 halftime lead, then stayed patient in the second half as the Warriors made all kinds of attempts to catch up.
Samantha Yaro’s improvement continued, as she and Maggie Monnat put up three goals apiece, half the Bees’ output. Sarah Clark scored twice, adding an assist as Ashley Gentile, Erin Ward, Mackenzie Kjerstad and Meg Haney got the other goals.
Most of Liverpool’s production came from a trio, as Allison Flood led both sides with four goals, with Nina Tassone (three goals) and Kathleen Conese (two goals, three assists) having strong outings, too.
Back home, the B’ville boys team engaged in a classic with Liverpool, making several comebacks before suffering a 14-12 defeat as the Warriors took over first place in the CNY Counties League National division.
It didn’t take too long for the game’s pattern to emerge. Liverpool would get a quick set of goals. Then B’ville would patiently work its way back even.
So it was in the first half, when Warrior goals by Nick Kline and Mike Mahardy 27 seconds apart broke an early 1-1 tie.
Liverpool would work the margin to 6-3, but the Bees, despite constant attacks, would not let the game get away, eventually pulling close by halftime and, with Billy Ward’s man-up goal 14 seconds into the third quarter, gaining a 6-6 tie.
Not fazed, the Warriors ambushed B’ville with three goals in 54 seconds, two of them (by Mahardy and Devin Clegg) just six seconds apart. Once more, the Bees got back even –at 9-9, then at 10-10 early in the fourth quarter.
A third time, Liverpool used a surge (Clegg and DiMarco converting in a 38-second span) to move out ahead, 14-11, only to have Kyle Styer record his fifth and sixth goals of the night to make it 13-12 with just 3:07 to play.
Staying cool, Liverpool worked the ball for a while, then got DiMarco to land his fourth goal with 1:43 left to serve as a clincher.
Aside from Styer, Casey Colligan proved his worth to the Bees, scoring twice and adding an assist. Ward and Dom Darcangelo each had a goal and two assists, with Tom Lawrence and Evan States also converting. Parker Ferrigan and his Liverpool counterpart, Jamie Campagna, each had 14 saves, reflecting how close the game was played.
