Even as the West Genesee softball team roared out to an 8-0 start, it knew that the toughest part of its schedule lay ahead. That kicked off last Monday afternoon, when the Wildcats hosted defending Section III Class AA champion Liverpol. And it proved to be an exciting battle, with one rally making the difference as WG took its first loss of the season, 3-1, to the Warriors. The Wildcats’ lone run came in the first inning, as Deanna Apps got the hit and scored. But for the rest of the game, WG could not solve Liverpool ace Tiffany Sampere, who surrendered just three hits and earned 12 strikeouts. Ashley Amidon, by contrast, had just two strikeouts. But other than a third-inning run, she kept the Warriors off the board, and it was 1-1 until the sixth, when Liverpool scored twice to move ahead for good. Emily Dumas led the visitors with three of her team’s seven hits.
