Canastota’s baseball team began its week with a 4-2 win over Sherburne-Earlville Monday afternoon that, along the way, included superb Raider defense. Three different times, the Raiders escaped trouble through its fielding, including a pair of double plays resulting from Rich Mitchell throwing out runners at home. Most thrilling, though, was catcher Jake LaBarre catching a bunt for an out, throwing to second to catch one runner, with a relay throw to first to complete a triple play. Up 2-1, the Raiders needed a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to account for its winning margin as Mitchell posted two hits and an RBI. Alex Foster added a triple as Bill Marsh threw a complete game, overcoming seven S-E hits to prevail. As this went on, Canastota’s softball team was blanking Sherburne-Earlville 14-0. Allowing just four hits, Jessica Patterelli and Valerie Baer combined for 11 strikeouts. Five runs in the first two innings established the Raiders’ control, and Canastota batted around in the fifth, earning six runs. Twice, Patterelli struck big blows that cleared the bases, hitting a three-run home run and adding a three-run triple. If she wasn’t striking, Alicia Hibbard did so, going deep again and finishing with four RBIs as Alexis Havens earned three hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs.
