Simply put, the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team was too busy — playing four times in six days during the week of spring break — to rest, or regroup. Maybe that was the best thing, for by winning in the wake of last Monday’s 15-14 loss to Fayetteville-Manlius, the Bees showed an ability to recover — and be resilient, too. All this began with the drama at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, where B’ville expected to handle an F-M team that didn’t seem to have as much depth as the Bees possessed. Perceptions began to change, though, after the Hornets erased B’ville’s early 4-2 lead by putting in five unanswered goals midway through the first half. Mollie Caputo, on her way to five goals, scored twice in this run, as did Taylor Robinson, while Sarah Lux provided feeds as she headed toward a six-assist effort. Now the chase began. B’ville closed within one, 8-7, by halftime, but F-M countered with three straight goals to start the second half, building the lead to 11-7. It was 13-9 when the Bees appeared to turn things around. In a span of 2:01, Maggie Monnat, Sarah Clark, Meghan Cuddy and Erin Ward all scored, and by the time it was done, it was a 13-13 tie, nearly 12 minutes remained, and F-M appeared ready to wear down.
Somehow, the Hornets regrouped, forced turnovers and reclaimed the lead once more as Morgan Same and Marri Ryu converted, the latter with 4:01 to play. Though Mackenzie Kjerstad would cut the margin to one seconds later, the Bees could not tie it as it turned the ball over with 1:30 left and watched F-M run out the clock. Kjerstad, with four goals, and Maggie Monnat, with two goals and three assists, led B’ville’s effort as Clark got three goals and Cuddy found the net twice. Claire Monnat had one goal and one assist, and Samantha Yaro also scored. Just 24 hours later, the Bees looked to bounce back against 4-2 Oswego, far from an easy opponent. Still, B’ville was up to it, needing a solid offensive effort to beat the Buccaneers 16-11. With its defense still having trouble, B’ville needed to be productive, edging out to a 9-7 halftime lead. The resistance improved in the late going, allowing the Bees some room to pull clear. Ward and Meg Haney both joined Maggie Monnat as the trio earned three-goal hat tricks. Monnat added two assists as Clark and Yaro each had two goals and one assist. Kjerstad, Ashley Gentile and Becky Guzzo earned single goals. Oswego saw Mikayla Place score four times as Amanda D’Amico, Kaitlyn Armstrong, Samantha McCarrick and Maia Czarnecki each scored twice.
