All kinds of star power was present when Liverpool’s boys track and field team went east to face Rome Free Academy last Wednesday at RFA Stadium.
But the Warriors would come out on top, 81-60, over the Black Knights because it had more depth, especially in distance events.
Zavon Watkins pulled off a rare triple. He won a sprint, the 400-meter dash (52.2 seconds), added a victory in the mile in 5:01.5, and then went to a field event, the high jump, and prevailed by clearing 5 feet 10 inches.
Of course, the Warriors won most of the events on the oval. Joe Spernyak took both the 110 high hurdles (15.4 seconds) and 400 hurdles (1:01.3), while Alex Wilke needed 2:10.9 to win at 800 meters and Colin Savage covered the 3,200-meter run in 10:38.
Liverpool took just one of three relays — the 4×800, where Anthony Brais, Zach Romano, Mychal Ostuni and Chris Clemons posted a time of 9:17.2. RFA standout Anthony DeJean tore to wins in the 100-meter dash (10.9 seconds), 200-meter dash (23.3 seconds) and long jump, where he went 20 feet 9 1/2 inches.
Then it was the Liverpool girls track team’s turn to go to RFA on Thursday, and it also proved successful, beating the Black Knights 89-52.
Rachel Putman earned victories in both the 800 (2:30.3) and 1,500-meter run (5:18.2). Trina Bills was first in the 400 hurdles in 1:08.7 and helped Ashley Letteney, Skye Borasky and Ash Spears win the 4×400 relay in 4:15.3.
Kyla Bills stepped up to win the 3,000-meter run in 11:36.5, after a 4×800 relay where Mary Anne Savage, Katie Rowell, Ali Whiting and Missy Riehl recorded a time of 12:05.4.
Excelling in field events, the Warriors saw Armani Moore go 16 feet 7 inches in the long jump and Megan Earle prevail in the triple jump (32 feet 7 inches). Meagan Turner won the high jump, clearing 4 feet 10 inches as Chelsea Attaway cleared 8 feet in the pole vault. Tatiana Gladney had a top shot put toss of 33 feet 8 1/4 inches.
On Saturday, the Liverpool boys team went to the John Arcaro Memorial Relays at Baldwinsville and earned several wins on its way to 84 points and third place behind Cicero-North Syracuse (115) and host B’ville (106).
Clemons, Wilke, Savage and Watkins helped Liverpool win the 4×400 relay in 3:30.9, then returned in 4×1,600 relay to prevail in 18:16.5. The Warriors also took the 4×200 (1:38.7) and 110 high hurdles (33.4 seconds), and prevailed in the shot put with two combined throws of 88 feet 1 inch.
